Keep it calm!

ashleynissim

I see a lot of owners who don't understand why their dogs aren't obeying their commands. They soon get frustrated and raise their voice. They then start repeating various commands over and over again.

They are confused about why the dog is not obeying them. What they aren't understanding is that their dog doesn't speak their language.

Raising a voice to get our kids to do what they've been told may work (sometimes!), but this is not the case for dogs.

A raised voice is just excitement and playfulness to a dog. It will often have the opposite effect and actually encourage the behaviour that you don't want. Too many commands does the same thing.

The key to communicating what you want from your dog is to be calm, patient, and use short commands that are not repeated over and over again!

And did I mention to be patient! Don't give up because it didn't work immediately. Give your dog time to work out what you are asking. They are pretty clever and will soon work it out!
